old friends sit on the park bench like bookends

One of my dearest and bestest friends has died suddenly. We were locker partners in high school. She sat in front of me in homeroom. We were co-captains of the cheerleaders for the wrestling team. And we stayed friends through many years and many changes. None of them obviously our looks.

    I lost a friend very unexpectedly this summer too. Grief is so awful. I hope your journey through it is amply supported by those still with you.

I'll tell you a half-dozen things that happened to me in Indiana when I went that far west to teach. You tell me if it was worth it. I lived in the country with my dog— part of the bargain of coming.
