"Breast cancer affects one in eight women during their lives. Breast cancer kills more women in the United States than any cancer except lung cancer. No one knows why some women get breast cancer, but there a number of risk factors. Risks that you cannot change include

* Age - the chance of getting breast cancer rises as a woman gets older
* Genes - there are two genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2, that greatly increase the risk. Women who have family members with breast or ovarian cancer may wish to be tested.
* Personal factors - beginning periods before age 12 or going through menopause after age 55

Other risks include being overweight, using hormone replacement therapy, taking birth control pills, drinking alcohol, not having children or having your first child after age 35 or having dense breasts.

Symptoms of breast cancer may include a lump in the breast, a change in size or shape of the breast or discharge from a nipple. Breast self-exam and mammography can help find breast cancer early when it is most treatable. Treatment may consist of radiation, lumpectomy, mastectomy, chemotherapy and hormone therapy.

Men can have breast cancer, too, but the number of cases is small."

    I believe we all have a family member or a friend who has suffered from this disease.

    You mother, daughter, aunt, cousin, teacher and your father, brother, son and your dog. Yes, even your dog. When I walked the San Francisco 3 Day, I was walking one day behind a woman who was walking in memory of her dog that'd died of breast cancer. As you and I know, when this disease is advanced, it's horrific. All of the money that has been raised has made a difference. Life expectancy has improved, surgical techniques and treatment options have improved-all because of research dollars. We all benefit.

Some goldfinches were having a melodious argument at the edge of a puddle. The birds wanted to bathe, or perhaps just to dip their heads and look at themselves, and they were having trouble with who should be first, and so on. So they discussed it while I stood in the distance, listening. Perhaps in Tibet, in the old holy places, they also have such fragile bells. Or are these birds really just that, bells come to us--come to this road in America--let us bow our heads and remember now how we used to do it, say a prayer.
